Fitness Fraud

Confession time.

I completed the Walt Disney World Half Marathon on January 9th.

Disney Half Marathon 79

I came home, took off my sneakers, and put them in the closet.

And that’s where they have stayed. After two years of running and working out at least four times a week, I have temporarily quit.

I have good reasons:

  • Physical fatigue and injury (I have a serious foot injury and a less serious groin injury)
  • Mental fatigue (I haven’t enjoyed running for the last few months)
  • A hatred of seeing my clock start with a “4″ — as in 4am
  • Some big projects that are taking more of my time than previously

But it’s hard to keep a fitness and healthy living blog when the closest thing you’re doing to working out is the walk from car to office and back.

I had a HUGE 2009, fitness-wise. I completed several triathlons (including an Olympic distance), a half marathons (two if you count Disney), did two major workout programs (P90X and Making the Cut) and got in the best shape of my life. I’m hoping that this month-long break will get me back in the game, so to speak.

Lucas and I are planning on doing round 2 of P90X (see my original recap here) starting next week, which should be the kickstart I need.

In other news — I am doing my best to take regular, outdoor lunch breaks…total stress relief.

Much needed when your brain is filled with this:

And I’m laughing whenever possible. That’s easy when you receive something like this from POM Wonderful:

And when gracious, giving, heartwarming people get into a bidding war over your baked goods! Thanks to everyone who donated to Diana’s #Bake4Haiti bake sale. It was amazing.

What’s the longest break you’ve taken from fitness or regular workouts?

  • Joy,

This comment not only made my day...it made my week. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much better I feel after reading this!

For me, a break was always what I needed to regain motivation. Sounds like you need the brake too for your overall health!
  • I love that apron! I think you can still write a healthy living blog even while taking a break from exercising because you are still a mindfully healthy person! The longest break I've ever taken was probably when I had my wisdom teeth out. It wasn't too long (2 weeks) but it did feel like a major break for me. I was excited to work out after the break was over! I think a break will be good for you and make you excited to workout again!
  • I am so proud of you for listening to your body and your mind and doing what's best for both. I don't want you to think that because I rejoice in your marathons and swims and bikes that I think they are what you are. You are a talented, gifted, wonderful person and no single activity defines you.
  • Sometimes I think that the blog world is great..other times I think it can perpetuate this 'need' to constantly be moving. It can sometimes get obsessed with working out, eating clean and saying 'I don't mind if I eat a cookie'. I appreciate you being honest about where you are, not feeling guilty about it and finding joy in living.

    I heart you..and your POM ta-tas :)

Everyone needs a break from fitness and training! I took one after the San Diego Rock n'Roll Marathon when i hurt myself...for over two months! Mine was a bit forced, but it helped me reassess what and how much I wanted to do in the future!

After a bust racing season this fall, I had to take a month off. I was burned out. I was dreading every run. I didn't enjoy it and every run felt nearly impossible. After some time off, I came back stronger (physically and mentally)...
  • What I great and challenging year! I broke my foot in Ocotber and had to take 6 weeks off of running. That was a learning experience.
  • Cute apron! :D

You definitely deserve a break and since you know your body better than anyone, no one but you can determine what is needed. Give yourself time off and find other ways to make yourself feel good.
  • Everyone needs a break sometimes, you deserve it!

    Katy -

Fraud my tatertot! Everyone needs a break, and deserves one. Hurrah to you for recognizing workout fatigue and doing something about it before you became so fed up you walked away forever. Congrats on your accomplishments. Your blog, expressing your feelings related to working out right now makes those of us who feel the same way know that it's normal. And frankly, darling, I for one was wondering if you were human with all the energy you were expending on working out, blogging, twitter, your professional career and apparent fledgling baking career : ) I'm on Week 3 workout 1 of Couch to 5K because of you - and guess what - I actually did the full workout and then half of it again because I felt so good. You inspire!
  • Joy,

  • I would have kept bidding if it was not date night with my wife!

And growing up an athlete (swimmer, practice at 5am & 4pm everyday with weight training thrown in), we made sure to always have a period to refresh. You deserve it!
  • Thanks, Will...and thanks for bidding!
  • I am right there with you! I took two weeks off after Disney and finally decided I needed to get myself to the gym or else I would not get rid of this weight. I think the longest break I had from workouts was last August because I was doing physical therapy, even though that's still a little bit of exercise. I've been looking into p90x and may try it out, as long as I don't die! :)
